The Sigma Home learning has demonstrated the need to focus on energy saving measures through the improved fabric design of buildings. Approximately 40% of the carbon saving was generated from the prototype closed panel timber frame system which was supplied and erected by Stewart Milne Timber Systems. The home has undergone a significant programme of air tightness testing and is currently undergoing a co-heating test that will assess the actual heat loss through the fabric, the results of which are already shaping the development of our future closed panel system, and a second evolution solution has already been identified. This solution responds to the difficulties in achieving air tightness by designing in "locking joints" and designing out the potential for thermal bridging. The second evolution system is simpler, more economic and effective to build; early indications show this system will produce savings of 10-12% over its predecessor. Other initiatives on the horizon will be the creation of the “Sigma Village” within the next 18-24 months and securing development sites in England; this maintains our position as industry leaders in the construction of environmentally sound, commercially viable housing. Already Stewart Milne Timber Systems have received interest from like-minded developers keen to work in true supply chain partnership for low, zero carbon sites, they are targeting and developing cost effective, sustainable and deliverable solutions for 2-3 years down the pipeline. |
