
Our HistoryThe First Step Aged just 21, he set up in business specialising in kitchen and bathroom conversions. and, within a year, had six employees. By 1975, Stewart Milne Construction Ltd employed 30 people and, with a turnover of £1 million, made the move into timber frame housebuilding. The decade ended with continued success – with the company’s housebuilding and construction remit constantly growing, work began on Stewart Milne’s first housing developments. The opening of the company’s timber frame factory reflected the demand for its services and, by 1978, a total of 135 employees contributed to a turnover of £2.2 million. Planning for Growth With 285 employees, the company’s growth is reflected in its turnover, which reached £10 million. Although the oil price crash of the mid-1980s hit many companies hard – particularly in the construction industry – Stewart Milne saw it as an opportunity to reassess plans and improve business development, moving into the 1990s on a solid footing. A New Presence The company’s timber frame division expanded into England, while the overall business grew to encompass 730 employees and a turnover of £132.5 million. Making bold steps, the company consolidated its presence in England, having launched one of Europe’s largest totally automated Timber Frame factories in Oxford. In Central Scotland, the business’ housebuilding operation expanded substantially, growing annual turnover to more than £171.5 million With a platform for major growth firmly in place by 2005, the company began to expand geographically. In 2007, Nuttal Construction became Stewart Milne’s first acquisition in England and the first English developments commenced. By acquiring A&L King in Perth, the company also strengthened its housebuilding and construction divisions in Central Scotland. Further exciting developments were also pushed to the fore. With innovation at the forefront of the company’s ethos, 2007 saw the launch of Sigma® – the UK’s first five star near carbon zero home. From modest beginnings, the Stewart Milne Group has harnessed innovation, dedication and a commitment to excellence to emerge as one of the UK’s best respected and most admired property and construction developers. With clear plans to grow in size and reach, the company continues to develop and strengthen and now employs around 900 people, generating a turnover of more than £276 million. As the company is in its 35th year, the values which contributed to its original success remain at the forefront of its approach, ensuring that the Stewart Milne Group will continue to build and evolve. |
