Established in 1975, the Stewart Milne Group is one of the UK’s leading independent home builders and construction companies, employing over 1,000 people.

We build quality residential homes and commercial builds for a range of customers including government bodies, private and public companies, local councils and private clients.

Our business has grown to reach a turnover of £350 million with a profit of £42 million and we have offices in Manchester, Oxford, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, with further development planned.

Our market leading position is based firmly on our expertise, innovation and quality along with our commitment to providing the best service to our customers.

The Group consists of five Divisions:

Stewart Milne Homes – one of the UK’s leading independent provider of quality homes with offices in Manchester, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Each year, we build more than 1000 high quality homes, from luxury city apartments and town houses to quality family homes and executive villas in prestigious suburbs.

We have a reputation for high quality and innovation, particularly in the field of carbon neutral construction – we are the first UK builder to design, develop and build the UK’s first five star near carbon zero home, the Sigma® Home.

Stewart Milne Timber Systems - the UK's leading provider of timber system solutions to the house building and commercial sectors.

From proven timber frame constructions to sustainable building solutions and advanced build solutions, we provide quality build systems, consistently delivering high levels of delivery, innovation and cost.

Our £10 million automated production facility in Oxford factory is one of the most advanced automated timber frame operations in Europe, producing 6,000 homes per year.

Stewart Milne Construction – delivering larger building projects within both the commercial and residential sectors for public and private sector clients across the UK.

Every project is unique and our project teams work in partnership with our customers to deliver high quality builds.

Stewart Milne Developments – delivering successful commercial investment opportunities on behalf of clients and in conjunction with partners.

Our Developments division has expanded in recent years and is responsible for such landmark projects as Union Plaza in Aberdeen and a new headquarters for a large energy organisation.

Stewart Milne Partnerships - creating affordable homes delivered through a thorough understanding of local, resident and local authority needs combined with vision, expertise and engagement.

Building a Legacy


1970s


1971: Aged 21, Stewart Milne sets up his business, specialising in kitchen and bathroom conversions

1975: Stewart Milne Construction Ltd is formed and the company moves into timber frame housebuilding

1978: We open our timber frame factory and begin our first housing developments

1980s

1983: Stewart Milne now has three major operations: Construction, Manufacturing, and Housebuilding, plus a Group Holding company

1984: We now have 285 employees and a turnover of £10 million

1986: An opportunity to reassess plans and improve our business, which now employs 350 people and has a turnover of £13.4 million

1990s

1990: We acquire Kildonan Investments and begin to supply our timber frame solutions throughout Central Scotland

1991: The construction of a new head office in Aberdeen reflects our growing business

1993: We establish a base in Edinburgh and extend our housebuilding activities to Central Scotland

1996: We acquire Ambion Homes, which gives us a strong presence in the West of Scotland and the business expands to include 650 employees, with a turnover of £98 million

2000s

2000: We celebrate our 25th anniversary and our timber frame division expands into England

2003: We launch one of the largest totally automated Timber Frame factories in Europe at our offices in Oxford, while housebuilding in Central Scotland expands substantially

2007: Nuttal Construction becomes our first acquisition in England and our first English developments commence. We also acquire A&L King in Perth, strengthening our housebuilding and construction divisions in Central Scotland.

With innovation at the forefront of what we do, we develop and launch Sigma® – the UK’s first five star carbon neutral home.

This year also sees our turnover grow to £350 million
